Top Asian comedian Shazia Mirza was the star of the show at Leeds Metropolitan University's Freshers Welcome Party for new students on 19 September.
by CHRIS BRADY

Held in a giant marquee at the university's Headingley campus, the popular laugh a minute entertainer was in top form during an evening that also saw other Asian themed talent wow the crowds in the form of Bhangra music, dancers and Indian drummers.
The evening event was part of a fortnight-long Freshers' Festival at Leeds Met, looking to embrace the cultural vibrancy of all its new students. The university attracts many British born Asians and also has a regular intake of international students from the South Asian region.
Joy Kumar, Director of Student-Centred Change Management, told the new students: "Have fun, meet people, make friends, and prepare yourselves for the challenge ahead."
Shazia has appeared on and written for countless television programmes, including Have I Got News for You and The South Bank Show, as well as featuring on radio and in theatre.
