Desi day
by CHRIS BRADY
Music loving students from Leeds helped make Diwali an unforgettable day for nearly 100 pupils at a neighbouring special school with a breathtaking performance of Asian music and dance.
Pupils from Allerton Grange School in Moortown, Leeds, including Desi dancers, dhol drummers and Hindu dance and music group, were invited to demonstrate their Asian art forms at the John Jamieson special school in Oakwood.
The musicians and dancers entertained nearly 100 pupils at the school with a lively performance at a Diwali themed assembly.
The performers also took time out to explain to the pupils how Diwali is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs.
Afterwards they invited members of the audience to try their hand at dhol drumming and join in with an entertaining dance finale.
The organiser of the event, Jabeen Iqbal, Parental Support Assistant at John Jamieson School, said: "It's difficult for our children to get out, so we like to bring people into the school.
"Having the Allerton Grange Asian dancers and musicians perform for us was part of our multi-cultural awareness programme, but it also brought other benefits for the children. The sights and sounds of the performance meant that they could get full benefit from the experience."
