The Copthorne Association, formed in January 2005 and made up of local people in the Great Horton area of the city has been short-listed for a £50,000 grant to develop near-by Linear Park into a Multi Use Games Area.
Vice chair of the associa
tion and learning mentor at Copthorne Primary School, Naveed Mushtaque told Asian Leader: "This is a really exciting opportunity for us to appear on local television and showcase how our young community would benefit from a games area like this."
The Copthorne Association is one of eight groups who will be competing it out for four pots of £50,000 courtesy of the Big Lottery Fund and each group will be making televised short films that will be featured on the Yorkshire news programme Calendar.
Two films will go head to head with television viewers voting for those who they feel deserve the money more. The four projects that miss out will then go head to head for the final sum of £50,000.
Copthorne's short film is set to be aired on 16 November and Naveed feels the area has a great chance of being successful. He says: "At the moment this is a derelict area and is being used as a dumping ground, 'a sight for sore eyes' where burnt cars have been found. This project is going to be real eye opener for the school children and the local community.
"We need support to bring smiles back to little faces - as the group with the most votes will receive the funding.
"The play area would provide football goals, a basketball court and climbing frames amongst other things and there is nothing else like that round here.
"Copthorne Primary School will really benefit from being able to use the facilities."
