"He's the next Amir Khan"
by CHRIS BRADY
Leeds teenage boxer Qais Ashfaq fought his way to the second national title of his blossoming amateur career on 24 March.
Fighting at the Golden Gloves Championships in Knottingley, West Yorkshire, the thirteen-year-old from Holt Park, stole the show as he outclassed his opponent Daniel Canmore to secure a comfortable points win.
His trainer Martin Bateson said afterwards: "The referee came up to me at the end saying 'He's the next Amir Khan that lad' and there was plenty more praise from other coaches.
Quick
"It was a lovely performance and I can see where the ref gets his comparison from because Qais moves and boxes, he's very quick on his feet, keeps out the way of any trouble and when he lands, he's got a strong punch."
International level
Qais is now aiming to make his bow at international level, representing England later this year a Four Nations event and a potential match-up with a stable of boxers from Thailand.
