Swadeshi Summer
Designers showcasing Spring Summer 06-07 Collections at India Fashion Week presented not just the hottest and most exotic collections, they featured a strong 'Swadeshi Element'.
Representing Indian pride with every stitch and seam, seeping through every silhouette - sari or sarongs, pants or hot pants, frocks or farshi salwaars – was the resonance of India Pride. Even socialites, celebrities and fashionistas came decked in sensuous, serious which bore hall marks of sub-continent style; it was a treat to see the front rows echoing the ethos off the ramps.
Indian style Gurus - Ashish Soni, Rajesh Pratap, Tarun Tahiliani, JJ Vallaya, Rohit Bal, AnaMika, and Manish Malothra - signed in grown up glamour. Visible was emphasis on ultra feminine power dressing. The floral motif, leaves of life, lace and net were reinterpreted with several romantic nuances.
Prints added to this, thematically tying in spring summer through myriad motifs -Garden of Eden, botanical bits and abstracts – created through digital dyes, tie and dyes, khari work; screen prints all enhanced the attire further. Even the thick ribbed ribbon ties, semi precious beads the look is very simple with a greater focus neat silhouettes and eclectic texturing
Shades: Focusing on a summery palette; white is haute, as is sand and ivories. Rose, bougainvillea pink, acid green and buttercup yellow and sorbet shades remain de rigueur for the season ahead. Night's palette was basics in black, with nuances of gray and touches of deep indigo-where it comes to traditional dressing- colours reign supreme
Silhouettes: Designers tempered tradition, shaping the silhouettes with contemporary cuts. Fusing age-old textile traditions, working in drapes they reinvented modern minimalism with aplomb. Tops were layered with Kalis, saris set off by corsets, Kurti fused with Kaftans, Straight Trousers took on the tautness of traditional shalwaars at the bottoms. Wonderous amalgamations of ensembles lead to an esoteric but international look that bore distinctive Indian-esque dictats.
