Sense & Sensibility
by Soniya Kirpalani
Ace Desi designer Deepika Gehani's model weaves her magic on the ramp. She rivets, she mesmerises, she seduces with her glances, like the woman immortalised by English poet John Keat – "A fairy's child; her hair was long, her foot was light..."
With ever abounding sensuality, Deepika's woman abandons transparencies and chooses to cover herself in vibrant drapes. She prefers satin and georgettes to emphasise the undulating energy of her silhouette. Other unique features of her creations are elaborate detailing, sparkle of jewels and semi-precious stones, the swirl of chiffon, swish of georgettes, caress of satin on silken skin.
Deepika's woman emerges from tones of blush to embody elegance and purity in shades of ivory and white. Waist clinched dresses, elegant styling and snug corsets emphasise sophisticated seduction.
Elegance, a quest for perfection, impeccable finishes and sophisticated forms are catalysts that spur Deepika since she entered the field in 1986. Intrigued by the rich and timeless Indian fabrics she works on reviving the age-old weaving and texturing techniques that reflect through her spawn new techniques of embellishments.
Embodying the timeless beauty of a woman on the ramp are the reigning Femina Miss India World 2006, Natasha Suri, Femina Miss India finalist and the 1st Runner Up at Miss Tourism International contest, Miss Tanya Vakil in swirl, silk and georgettes slink in beauteous imagery of sheer poetry!
Holding the three C's - Cut, Cloth and Creativity –at the cornerstone of this collection, Deepika signs in with intangible class and sophistication. Today 20 stores represent her across the globe including her own flagship. Her meteoric rise has occurred since her corporate partnership with Genesis Colours- where economics and élan meet.
