SUMMER SURPRISES
Desi designers are using their threads of tradition to engage their audiences into experimenting with everything relevant to new era fashion…writes Soniya Kirpalani
This year the rest of the globe will draw inspiration from south Asia. As eastern style sets the denominator, every store and stockist is sailing the silk route to sign on the much sought-after Desi designer labels.
Fshionistas are now competing for the 'latest I-Candy' look. Gone are the days when we got our trends from western catwalk trends, designers in Asia have a new found sophistication of their own and are filled with serious fun and elegant expressions.
Summer's signature comes from the red desert dunes and lush rain filled streets if India and Pakistan; here there are no designer diktats but a precursor to an innovative people's process. Ace designer Tarun Tahiliani proves time and time again that he is the Guru of Glamour. Inspiring exquisite elegance in everyday women, he captures his innate expressiveness and resonates it through colour. Subtle wasp waists, sculpted on corsetiere, drapes that dare all bear witness to the regal Renaissance of the Rajput and Mogul courts. His finesse is not compromised as he uses contemporary fabrics like French Silk, Lycra, printed satins and chiffons with a touch of classic with cutting edge.
This year summer is sassy, super sensuous and sheer as signed in by Deepika Gehani in her collection aptly titled 'First Flush of Love."
Fashion and worldliness, a unique medley of trendiest designs in apparel, set off by shades of ivory and strung up with pearls and Swarovski. The ruse of romance in frills and trills beckon childlike innocence in every woman with a nod of grown up glam.
Passion, sensuous and seductive -even in Saris and signature silhouettes- as Satya Paul does a take on the 30s era. Flapper dresses in deeper shades of wine and emerald green to neon yellow are shaped tempestously and tailored and textured to tease the eye. Liberally using rich fabric like taffeta silk, satin and Chantilly lace, crepes and georgettes the designer's uses sparkles and sequins sprinklers.
