Karachi recently rolled out the red carpet for the 'largest fashion event of Pakistan.' Press photographers and TV cameramen struggled to capture the arrival of hordes of Desi celebrities and socialites at the 'Carnival De Couture.'

Celebrating the giddily glitzy 'Carnival Era' -with almost Bacchanalian revelry- Rizwan Beyg showcased contemporary cuts of Pakistani through a spectrum of Ghagharas meshed into layered skirts, achkans in a new avatar as ephemeral coats and shalwaars morphed into sassy 21st century derring-do. Using an entire vocabulary of embellishments -sparkle of sequins, sheen of Swarovski, hand made guipiyere lace, chikankari, zardorzi, Farsi stitches and petit point - he wittily worked over prints and into fabric detailing.
Showcasing Swadeshi style through extempore exploration of eastern aesthetics Tarun Tahiliani captured modern Indian elements and morphed them into digital designs, then structuring it with an imprudent 'colour & cut' synergy. High-waisted skirts, Lolita like lace dresses, soft sensuous gowns, printed suits and sensuously flowing saris showcased the designer's oeuvre. The showstopper -worn by Shilpa Shetty- was a floral, sleek sari set off by a snug cummerbund and choli straps, scintillating in sheer Swarovski, an ensemble Shilpa carried with élan.
Costume Designer & Stylist to the stars Manish Malothra should rename his line -Bollywood Ahoy! Showcasing a sea of saris with some sharp blouse cuts and even bolder color candy wrapper shades, he used a limited range of sequins and Swarovski along with zardorzi. This costumier used a colorful rumble of celebrities like Miland Soman to add power to Puff Dressing. Working this Happy Hour was muse, Urmila Matondkar, who ramp-raged in jerky jhatkas setting the audience into a total tizzy.
The Desi Dhol grew louder as the evening turned into the night, and the celebration continued in true Carnival of Style- Pakistan definitely made it a night to remember.
